iPhone Duo inner display cracking: what Apple says and what to do
Short answer: Apple says a small number of iPhone Duo units have an inner display issue, and affected owners should contact AppleCare for a replacement. You don’t need AppleCare+, and there is no recall. If your Duo has worked fine for a week or more, it’s unlikely to be affected.
Update, November 3: what Apple said this week
On November 2, Apple CEO John Ternus told Reuters that “a very small percentage” of iPhone Duo units had been returned with display issues, and that Apple is replacing those units with new ones. He didn’t give a number.
The catch is stock. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that some Apple Stores can’t do an immediate swap because they don’t have replacement units on hand. Apple says it can’t yet predict when Duo supply will catch up with demand, and new orders on Apple’s site are showing January delivery estimates.
If your store has no replacement in stock, Gurman says going through AppleCare directly may get you a better option than waiting on an in-store swap. Either way, take your photos and back up first, as below.

What people are seeing
Soon after the Duo started reaching customers in late October, some early owners reported cracks on the inner display along the center line of the hinge, with lines running down the middle and toward the right side of the screen. Reports spread on Reddit and other forums. Some of the photos going around were AI generated fakes, so not every viral image is a real case.
What Apple has said
In a statement to 9to5Mac on October 26, Apple said it is “aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units” and that users “should contact AppleCare for a replacement.” Later that week, MacRumors reported an internal memo telling Apple Stores and Authorized Service Providers to inspect affected units and repair or replace them under standard procedures.
Apple also said:
- Most iPhone Duo units are not susceptible.
- Affected units tend to show the defect quickly after use.
- There is no recall, and no public repair program page yet.
What causes it
Apple hasn’t named a cause. iFixit’s teardown points to a likely defective hinge on affected units, with some components possibly putting extra pressure on the display. Treat that as a likely explanation, not a confirmed one.
What to do if your inner display cracks
- Take clear photos of the lines or crack, with the date, before you do anything else.
- Contact AppleCare directly. Use Apple’s support site or call 1-800-APL-CARE in the U.S. and Canada. You don’t need AppleCare+.
- Bought from a carrier? Still go to AppleCare, not your carrier.
- Back up first. A replacement means a new device, so make sure your iCloud or computer backup is current.
Should you still use your Duo?
If your Duo has been fine since launch, the reporting suggests you’re past the window where this shows up. MacRumors’ one week review says none of its team had a crack and that the reviewer plans to keep using his.
